What’s all this talk of people going bankrupt on the stock market?

How does this even happen? What? Are these people putting ALL their money in the stock market? I don’t get it. It just doesn’t seem like putting say – $1,000 in would make you go bankrupt. What? Do they come and take all you have when a stock hits bottom?
Some people do have the vast majority of their assets in the stock market. Others may use leverage when investing, increasing the possiblity of suffering really dramatic reverses or even winding up in a situation where they owe their brokers lots of money. And let’s face it losing a lot of money can make you exaggerate a wee bit…
