To make money.
I can’t think of any other intelligent reason.
To make money.
when you invest (for example Apple Co.) you buy shares. shares are a part of the company itself. If people buy more ipods than usual, the shares price goes up, therefor you buy one share for 50 dollars, and can sell it for 60 or however much you made. But if nobody buys any Apple products, the shares go down.
Historically, investing in the stock market yielded more profit over a long period of time (not a short-term gyration of the market) compared to other types of investment. Warren Buffett of Berkeshire Hatherway, a well known billionnaire is the guru of stock market investor. You can study about him and find out how he had made his billions.

Because we live in a capitalist society. Money rules or lives. Money is made by coporations. Most of us invest our lives in corporations. You can have a (monetary) share in one of these corporations by investing in the stock market. I suggest you read the history of the Stock Exchange it will give you an insight as to why it is there and will answer your question.
