The stock market is simply a place where company stock is bought and sold daily. People put up capital and use a reasonable amount of risk in the hopes for a gain.
Americans will invest in foreign stock markets with the hopes of higher returns and more diversification, as they do with our markets.
Stock Markets are used so that companies that need money to grow can get it by selling pieces of the company (shares of stock) to investors willing to pay money for a piece of the companies future profits.
Obviously the stock market is much more complex than this, but this is the main reason for the existence of stock markets in the world. They connect companies who need money with investors looking to spend money, while also letting those original investors sell their shares to other investors when they wish to convert their ownership back into cash later on.
